But he could be taking that iconic role up again as he dropped a huge hint it’s coming back – as long as everyone is vaccinated.

Hugh told Zoe Ball on her BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show: “Here’s the deal, if everybody who is offered a vaccine takes a vaccine, we can make a movie. We will make a movie.”

He added: “The planets are circling. They are beginning to get into alignment.

“There is a thing called coronavirus knocking around and until that is under control in a sensible way, we are not going to get all those ducks in a row.”

The star continued: “But there is certainly the intention to do it. We would love to do it. We are desperate to do it.”

The first Downton Abbey movie followed Robert and Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern) as they prepared the estate for a royal visit.

But several issues threaten to derail the event – including a possible assassination attempt.

The film was a huge success – making £153million at the global box office.

In September last year, actor Jim Carter – who plays butler Mr Carson – confirmed a second film was going ahead.

“Holly, if you promise not to tell anyone, I’ll let you know that we’ve seen a script,” he explained.

He added: “The script for a second film is there, we’ve seen it.

“It’s very funny, it’s got all the same characters in, all the regular characters.

“I think the will is that, COVID-willing, we’ll film it next year.”
