How Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy became embroiled in Wagatha battle – including their VERY awkward chat

()

WAGATHA husbands Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy kicked off their own war of words during the spectacular libel battle.

England’s record goalscorer Wayne, 36, furiously branded his former teammate, Jamie, 35, a “bottler” for not taking the witness stand.

Wayne and Jamie had their own bust up during the Wagatha trial

He lashed out after Jamie, the Leicester City striker, accused Wayne of “talking nonsense” after his testimony to London’s High Court.

Ex-Manchester United ace Wayne, now in charge of MLS side DC United, said he spoke to his teammate at Euro 2016 to pull his “fame hungry” wife into line.

The ex-England skipper agreed to have the “awkward” chat after Three Lions then boss Roy Hodgson expressed concerns.

Rooney said they sat down in the team’s games room for the tricky heart-to-heart.

Giving evidence during the libel battle he revealed: “As captain I was asked to speak to Mr Vardy on issues regarding his wife.

“The England manager Roy Hodgson and assistant manager Gary Neville asked me as captain to speak to him and I followed their instructions.

“We all knew when we spoke about it that it was an awkward subject.

“I agreed to speak to Mr Vardy and asked him to speak to his wife to ask her to calm down and not bring any issues off the field that was unnecessary.

“It was awkward for me to speak to a teammate about his wife.

“We were sat in our games room – there was a dart board, pool table and table tennis.

“Mr Vardy had a can of Red Bull and I had a coffee and I remember the conversation I had with him because it was such an awkward moment.”

Rooney told how Becky was never off FaceTime during the tournament and was almost a member of the team.

The former striker, who netted 53 goals for his country, said: “I had bigger things on my mind.

“It was an odd moment for me to speak to Jamie about his wife but I thought it was necessary having been asked by the England manager to speak to Jamie.

“I was aware it was an awkward situation for me and for Mr Vardy but in the best interests of the team, having been asked by the manager, I followed the instruction.

HUSBANDS AT WAR

“It was spoken among the players and management that no one would have any distractions.

“It wasn’t set in law…but we didn’t want any paper columns or articles.

“That was a conversation we had as players.”

The conversation between the two players took place on the eve of England’s embarrassing 2-1 defeat to Iceland.

Vardy, who was in court and watched his former teammate give evidence, left with wife Becky at the lunch break and failed to return.

He later issued a statement which read: “Wayne is talking nonsense.

“He must be confused because he never spoke to me about issues concerning Becky’s media work at Euro 2016. There was nothing to speak about.

“I know this because I discuss everything with Becky.”

Rooney hit back and branded Vardy a ‘chicken’ for issuing a statement and not having the guts to enter the witness stand under oath.

A source told The Sun: “Wayne feels Jamie bottled it by not going on to the witness stand and saying what he wanted to say under oath.

“That way he could have been cross examined like Wayne was on the truth of what he was saying.
